Indian engineer among seven killed at factory explosion in Khartoum

June 22, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – Seven people were killed, including an Indian engineer, and three injured following an explosion that occurred on Sunday at a gas production factory in a suburb south of the Sudanese capital.

Fire trucks, ambulances and police immediately rushed to the scene.

According to a source who spoke to Sudan Tribune, the violent explosion shook the Soba suburb this afternoon, during the unloading freight car loaded with gas in al-Shorooq factory.

He said that the bodies along with those injured were taken to Bashayer hospital, noting that the bodies of the victims were ripped to pieces as a result of the powerful explosion.

The intensity of the explosion caused the destruction of the plant, which also employs foreign technicians.

The director of operations at the police defence forces in Khartoum state, Brigadier Osman Atta said the blast occurred as a result of pressure during the process of filling oxygen gas cylinders.

He said that civil defense forces dispatched bodies to the morgue and then handed it over to their families adding that the plant manager was one of the victims.
