Al-Beshir receives phone call from Powell over Sudanese peace talks

KHARTOUM, Mar 08, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The Sudanese president Omar al-Beshir, yesterday evening received a telephone call from the US secretary of state, Colin Powell.

Powell reiterated the support of US administration to the Sudanese peace talks in Naivasha. He noted his country’s firm stand which aims at realizing peace in the country.

He said the US president, George Bush, was personally concerned about the progress of the peace negotiations in the country. He said he was confident the two sides will arrive at an acceptable and lasting peace agreement.

The Secretary of State promised last month in an interview to the Washington Post to remove Sudan from the US list of terrorism States.

Colin Powell paid a visit to Naivasha in October and since then Washington has ratcheted up the pressure urging the two sides not to miss a “historic opportunity” for peace.
