Gunmen kill five people in South Darfur

December 24, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — Five people were shot dead and two others wounded last Monday following a group of unidentified gunmen ambushed their vehicle near Buram in South Darfur State.

A UNAMID team confirmed that two armed men opened fire at “a Land Rover with 15 passengers on board at Sadr-Al khalil area of Buram, about 5 km from Kando village, killing five (people) and injuring others,” said Nouredine Mezni, the official spokesperson of the hybrid peacekeeping mission in Darfur.

Asked about the motive behind the attack, Mezni told Sudan Tribune that it was not yet established as nothing was reportedly looted.

“Sudanese police is investigating the incident,” he further added.

The injured victims are receiving treatment at Joghana clinic, South Darfur, he said.

After some nearly years of war in the troubled western Sudan region of Darfur, uncontrolled armed men who formerly fought besides the government or supported the rebellion attack regularly aid workers, peacekeepers and even government police.

In a series of attack against UNAMID earlier this month Gunmen killed five Rwandan soldiers in North Darfur. The attackers’ motives were unclear, but they might have been trying to steal the troops’ vehicles.

Also on December 11, armed bandits killed a member of the Sudanese parliament who had refused to give them his car in the road of Nyala-Buram, South Darfur.
