Lakes state wounded heroes and widows walk to freedom square

July 7, 2011 (AWERIAL) – Hundreds of war veterans and widows in Lakes State marched on the streets of Rumbek on Thursday in a show of satisfaction and joy for what can be described as ‘mission accomplished’ ahead of South Sudan’s independence.

The mid-morning march started at the State Legislative Assembly, passing through Rumbek town up to the State Secretariat where they were addressed by the governor of the state, Chol Tong Mayay.

Governor Tong praised the heroic show from the veterans and widows, acknowledging their instrumental role in the journey to South Sudan Independence by stating that it was the veterans’ sacrifices that made 9 July possible.

In 2005 North and South Sudan signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005, ending more than two decades of civil war in which two million died. In January 2011 the South Sudanese voted, in accordance with a stipulation of the CPA, voted in a plebiscite. The secession will be realised on 9 July 2011.

Tong said that the heroes were there to remind those who had already forgotten the price paid to achieve the independence of South Sudan, likening their ownership of the land of South Sudan to a mother and her her child.

He promised the jubilant veterans and widows a bull for each of the remaining days, encouraging them to march daily until that great day when the flag of South Sudan will be hoisted to signify the birth of the Republic of South Sudan.

Very terrible, all these comrades were maimed by Salfa Mathok the commander of SAF forces in Rumbek then, in-law to Kiir and now the most corrupted SPLA general in Juba stabbing us at the back economically!
But when did a bull per day become a compensation for loosing one’s leg?
    Lake state oyeeeee!
    Chol Tong Mayai oyeeeeeee!

To come back to the Governor’s promising these freedom fighters a bull each day till july 9.is thats all you can promise to them. this is an insult to their services to this country.these war ventrans deserved more then just a bull.mr governor they deserved dignify honor from all of us who are alive and even the next generations to come.they deserved lives pensions and well built model houses paid for by your government.they need to have free heathcare, not just simple healthcare the one that covered everything.furthermore he should resign right now for that stupid commence.
