South Sudan speaker briefs Kiir on parliamentary developments

18 October 2011 (JUBA) – The head of the South Sudan government, Salva Kiir Mayadrit was informed today by James Wani, the speaker of legislative assembly about the latest developments in the parliament.

The South Sudan National Legislative Assembly (SSNLA) decided on Monday to keep the number of specialized committees at 18 and not increase it to 25 as was suggested. Following this vote the speaker resolved the current panels.

Speaking to the media following the meeting with the President Salva Kiir, Wani said that the vote of the legislators to maintain the number of committees forced the parliament to dissolve the existing parliamentary committees.

He went further to say that this decision will allow new members to participate in the important work of the parliamentary committees and every working group will designate its chairperson and his deputy.

The specialized committees accomplish much of parliamentary work. They examine proposed new laws in detail and hear to the government officials about their policy or programmes. They also control or investigate the activities of the different administrations.

Wani explained that the dissolution of the current heads of the specialized committees would give room for accommodation of the “newcomers” in the leadership of the committees.

According to the purposed distribution of the 18 specialized committees, 10 positions of the chairpersons will be shared equally between the ten states, one for each state, while the remaining eight will be divided among the eight most populous states.

The states caucuses will consult to nominate their respective choices to take up the allocated positions in the committees.

Since 2005 and for the last six years of interim period that led to independence of South Sudan on 9 July 2011, the parliament’s membership totaled 170. However, the number has increased to 350 after independence because of amalgamation of over 100 South Sudanese parliamentarians who were elected to the previous national assembly in Khartoum and the new 66 members that have been appointed by the President.

The dissolution of the parliamentarian committee will not change much but us the people of South Sudan waiting for the delivering of services to all Ten State. Further I encourage Mr. Speaker of Parliament Wani Igg to eradicate and promote the good service in the Country with our President Kirr. The second step which is primordial is to give the freedom of speech to the parliamentarian.

The Country needs the true democracy, in term of development of the new nation. each Ministers concerned may give full financial resources to construct and build Road, Universities, hospitals, schools and agriculture where our people can cultivate their own land. The third issues are that, our Country is occupied by the Foreigners neighbors; the rules and regulation may step up by Parliament.
