August 29, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Thabo Mbeki, head of the Africa Union (AU) panel mediating talks between Sudan and South Sudan, is expected to arrive in the former’s capital Khartoum on Friday to hold talks with government officials ahead of what a Sudan Tribune source described as the “final” round of negotiations between the two countries prior to a presidential summit between Omer Al-Bashir and Salva Kiir Mayradit.

Rival Sudan and South Sudan are due to resume negotiations on post-secession issues in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on 4 September.

The UN Security Council (UNSC) extended until 22 September the three-month deadline it stipulated for the conclusion of the talks after the previous round culminated in a much-welcomed deal to resume South Sudan oil exports via Sudan at an average rate of $10 per barrel plus $3.028 billion in transitional financial assistance to Khartoum over the three-year period of the agreement.

Sudan Tribune has learned that Mbeki will visit Khartoum on Friday, 31 August, to hold talks with government officials and put forward new conciliatory proposals on the remaining issues which include the establishment of a demilitarized zone along the borders and disputed territories.

Sudanese officials said that Mbeki would hold a meeting with members of Khartoum’s negotiating team and president Omer Al-Bashir in order to explore their views ahead of the next round. Al-Bashir is currently in Iran participating in an international summit due to end on Friday.

A member of Khartoum’s negotiating team who asked not to be named told Sudan Tribune that the next round will be “final” and followed by a summit between Omer Al-Bashir and his South Sudanese counterpart Salva Kiir Mayardit to focus on resolving the issue of the disputed territory Abyei.

The official said their team is planning to issue a press statement explaining Khartoum’s overall view on the outstanding issues prior to the resumption of talks.

The next round was originally scheduled for 26 August but was postponed due to the death of Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Meles Zenawi which was announced five days before.

    To Mr. Mbeki,
Please remove the "Mile 14" area from your map because it is not disputed area but completely Sudan land, its real name is "Samaha" and it’s Rezegat tribe land!
One more thing,u need to ask the south to pay us extra $3bn since Salva Kiir confessed to Obama that they supported SPLM-N gangsters,we will use that money to fix the damage they did!
    Thx

Earlier this year, the UN asks both Sudan and South Sudan to pull out of Abyei and Panthou. South Sudan pulls its troop out but Sudan defies UN orders. Why does South Sudan keep going for talk? How could South Sudan expect Sudan to be serous when they can’t even respect UN orders?

When is, $ 3.028 billion became so easy in South Sudan to give away? The IMF last week was offering just $ 10 million interest-free to South Sudan. If Sudanese believes $ 3.00 billion is that easy to offer; they should summit their application to the IMF and if they get $ 3 billion that easily, then South Sudanese will reconsider the decision to offer that much money to Sudan.

South Sudanese today are sophisticated compare to previous generation. The Sudanese would be naive if they don’t have any clue about today South Sudanese. Sudanese believes if they said $ 3.028 billion; we will have no idea of how big that number is. This is $ 3,028,000,000.00 that’s how $ 3.028 billion look like. United States, richest country in the world, don’t give away that much money easily!

there is no way anyone can marry a child, even in our traditional, anamist religiong you consider backwards. Mohamed Ali lacked morality and therefore was not a prophet but a thug like Beshir. Only thing he did was to copy the bible and torah and mix it with pagan religions of Iran and India/ check your sources very well. see arabic alphabets. their origin is fars. so, where did the qoran come fro

You talk about your traditional religions where you are allowed to inherit your father’s wives, sleep with your dead brother’s wife and name your children after him? give me a break..

No, and Big No, you don’t know your religion otherwise you would have known that Khadija has raised the adopted son that later turned husband. Muslims know it, the world knows that, and if you don’t know and refused not to know it then it is your own problem. 2nd I have been seriously disadvantged by your religion and that’s why I have to study it and know what it is in it.

Is it not the same Islam that banned African non-Muslim Sudanese not to hold the political key positions in their own homeland that led to the separation of North Sudan from rest of the country? Was it not the same Islam that is being used by Arabs to kill people?
