September 26, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Khartoum government released 19 South Sudanese prisoners of war (POWs), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement published on Wednesday.

The armies of the two countries clashed last April when the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) stormed the oil producing area of Heglig /Panthou accusing the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) of carrying out attacks inside the South Sudanese territory; as Khartoum says Juba harbours Sudanese rebels.

"In its capacity as neutral intermediary, the ICRC helped the prisoners of war to return home after obtaining their consent," said Jean-Christophe Sandoz, head of the ICRC delegation in Sudan.

The prisoners of war were transported aboard an ICRC aircraft from Sudan to South Sudan, where they were handed to the South Sudanese authorities.

In April, the Red Cross facilitated the repatriation of 13 Sudanese prisoners of war arrested at the Heglig hospital with some members of the medical team after their release by the South Sudanese authorities.

The Sudanese army retook control of Heglig ten days later as Juba announced the withdrawal of its troops after heavy clashes with SAF.

      Hi To all
The report was not clear, SPLA has been releasing thousand of prisoners of war, in fact ten thousand prisoners of war have been released during civil wars.
The reporter would put it clearly that, Sudan’ SAF released 19 POW for the first time in Sudan history while SPLA released ten thousand POW.
I think Bashir order the release of 19 prisoner of war due to hot soup he smelled in Addis.

Bashir has no choice or space to turn the negotiation but to accept every things forwarded to table unconditionally, it was not their interest to release POW as Arabs but Salva Kiir Mayardit and the chief negotiater for South Sudan Mr. Pagan have all the tactics and the tied policy now make Sudan’s Omer Bashir fragile in negotiation.

This is the difference between a proper army and a bunch of drunk rebels. When SPLA invaded Heglieg they took sick patients at higlieg hospital as POW and paraded them at Juba airport claiming them to be SAF soldiers. While SAF captures 19 SPLA soldiers and releases them like a bunch of flies. All in a days work for mighty SAF.

These POW’s should not have been released until a deal has been struck that involved the release of Telefon Kuko by South Sudan. Anyway, well done GOS, hope they’ve been treated well.
