Sudan appoints new representative for Abyei joint body

September 2, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese president Omer al-Bashir issued on Tuesday a presidential decree appointing, Hassan Ali Nimir, as new co-chair of Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC) for the Sudanese side.

The decision which has been released by the official news agency didn’t mention the fate of the former representative of the Sudanese government , Al-Khair Al-Faheem, who was reportedly very criticised by the Misseriya community leaders.

The new AJOC co-chair is currently, West Kordofan state’ agriculture minister.

He is also a member of Nimir’s family which leads the Misseriya tribe.

The oversight committee is formed in accordance with the Temporary Arrangements for the Administration and Security of the Abyei Area signed 20th June 2011,

In line with the 2005 peace agreement, the residents of the disputed area of Abyei are supposed to decide in a referendum if they want to remain part of the current Sudan or join the new state of South Sudan.

However, the two parties continue to disagree on the participation of the nomads who reside several months every year in the contested region.

The Ngok Dinka of Abyei refuse the formation of a new joint administration and held an unilateral referendum. By the vote was rejected by Juba and Khartoum.
