Jur River county commissioner suspends local chief

November 25, 2014 (WAU) – The commissioner of Jur River county commissioner in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal state, John Arop Apai has suspended the chief of Atido boma.

The commissioner’s letter suspending Elario Ayoro Akol was issued on 20 November.

“In exercise of the powers conferred upon me under the traditional constitution of WBGS 2011, chapter 11 article 2 and read together with chapter VI article 52 section a, c and d of the local government act 2009, I John Arop Apai, commissioner of Jur River county do hereby issue order suspending the chief from his post,” reads the letter.

Misconduct before the county authorities was cited as one of crimes Akol’s committed.

“He was not responding to calls from the county’s authority when all chiefs of the county were called for an official meeting at the county headquarters,” alleged Apai.

The suspended chief is also faulted for giving failed to attend a peace conference organised in Roc Roc Dong payam last week.

Akol, also a member of South Sudan police service, was also accused of allegedly disrespecting the county commissioner and interfering in some executive powers beyond his jurisdiction as chief.

Sudan Tribune was unable to reach the suspended chief, despite several attempts.
