The decision was reportedly made after the state municipality mayor demanded that the suspects not be presented by a defense lawyer.

There was heavy deployment of security personnel throughout the trial, as hundreds of the suspects’ relatives thronged court premises awaiting Tuesday’s session.

“The suspects if found guilty should be sentence to death because they have committed very big offenses. They raped our children in front of us and shot dead our relatives and driven away with our money at homes during their night robberies,” said a Wau resident.

The month-long trial drew controversy after some members of the national army were accused of allegedly robbing at gun point. These allegations could not be ascertained.

This is the first time suspects are being tried connection with night robberies in Wau.
