RNM reiterates its demand for conducive environment before Sudan’s dialogue

July 20 (KHARTOUM) – The opposition Reform Now Movement (RNM) has reiterated its request to implement a number of confidence building measures before to resume its participation in the national dialogue, an internal political process aiming to end war and achieve constitutional reforms.

The RNM, which is a splinter faction from the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) chaired by former presidential Ghazi Salah al-Din, suspended its participation in the dialogue process in January 2015 . At the time, the Just Peace Forum (JPF) had withdrawn from the process but rejoined it last June.

RNM political secretary Ussama Tawfiq told the official news agency SUNA on Monday that a negotiated political settlement for Sudan’s problems is “the best choice”, adding that all the political parties agree on this matter.

“The success of the dialogue depends on the fulfilment of a set of requirements, including the time frame, impartiality, ensuring freedoms enshrined in the Constitution, and the inclusion in the dialogue of all the political forces and weapon bearers,” Tawfiq further said.

The holdout opposition forces demand to ensure political freedoms, full guarantee of the freedom of expression, release of political prisoners and detainees. Also, they requests the participation of the armed groups in the process.

The government of president Omer al-Bashir is accused, even by the international community, of lack of seriousness, particularly when it declined to participate in a national dialogue preparatory meeting called by the African Union mediation team last March.

Recently, the government said willing to resume separate talks with the rebel groups (two tracks one process approach) and refuses a proposal by the political and armed opposition forces to negotiate a comprehensive cessation of hostilities in Darfur and the Two Areas.

The government also rejects a proposal by Darfur rebel groups to open the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.

Opposition forces participating in the dialogue, however seeks to bring back the RNM and the National Umma Party of Sadiq al-Mahdi as the government vowed to resume the internal political process during the upcoming weeks.
