Despite the secession of South Sudan in 2011, the Vatican maintained Cardinal Wako who is from Western Bahr Al Ghazal state.

The appointment of Bishop Mungoria of El Obeid Diocese was announced on Saturday 15 August 2015. He is the first Sudanese Nuba to hold this position.

He will replace Cardinal Wako with effect from January 2016.

The Archbishop Coadjutor was born on 1 January 1959 at Engoth, in the Nuba Mountains area, South Kordofan state.

He was ordained as priest in Khartoum on 10 May 1992. Five years later he travelled to Rome where he got a Degree on Canon Law in 2001, at the Urban Pontifical University.

From 2001 to 2008, he was a Member of the Council of Presbyters and of the College of Consultants. Then, he was appointed Rector of St. Paul’s Major Seminary in Khartoum.

Two years later, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as Coadjutor Bishop of El-Obeid, and he became the Ordinary Bishop on 28 October 2013.
