Rising insecurity undermine peaceful transition in S. Sudan: activist

March 29, 2021 (JUBA) – A South Sudanese activist has expressed concerns over the growing insecurity incidences across the country, saying it totally undermines the spirit of peaceful transitioning.

The concerns come in the wake of recent killing of civilians by armed men in Upper Nile state capital, Malakal and another incident which occurred at Camp 15 of Budi County in Eastern Equatoria State.

“These are acts of undermining the peaceful transitioning of the country from violence to peace. Community Empowerment for Progress Organization strongly condemned the incident,” Edmund Yakani said in a statement extended to Sudan Tribune on Monday.

“It is a clear act of group of individuals turning against peaceful settlement of political difference,” he added.

The activist said the unity government and the ceasefire monitoring body (CTSAMVMV) should ensure that individuals or group of persons behind the two separate attack incidences are held accountable.

“The growing incidences of attacks on civilians and cantonments sites across the country is raising concern on the fate of the genuine implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, Yakani urged South Sudan President Salva Kiir to convene an urgent meeting on the growing incidences of insecurity that directly undermine the implementation of the peace accord.

“Genuine commitment for delivering Chapter 2 of the R-ARCSS [Revitilised peace agreement] is essential for secure centralized security commend of the forces,” he said.

South Sudan has been struggling to recover from five years of a civil war that killed almost 400,000 people, according to reports. A coalition government formed in February last year between President Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar is implementing a peace agreement behind schedule, while deadly violence continues in parts of the country.
