The SPLA was established as a rebel group in 1983 fighting SAF until a 2005 peace deal, after which the SPLA became the official army of the autonmous South. On 9 July 2011 South Sudan seceded from Sudan and the SPLA became the military of the independent Republic of South Sudan.
