Students burn down nine campus buildings in Sudan

KHARTOUM, June 16 (AFP) — University students enraged by the make-up of a committee appointed to organise union polls burned down nine buildings on their campus in Khartoum’s twin city of Omdurman, Sudanese police said Thursday.

The buildings housing the offices of the president, vice president and registrar of the privately-owned Ahlia University as well as a computer room were among those set ablaze by the student protesters, police added.

Witnesses reported injuries, but police did not provide numbers.

They said Wednesday’s protest broke out after members of the ruling National Congress party were angered by the appointment of a woman from the opposition Umma party on the electoral committee.
