Ugandan president warns Sudan against rearming LRA rebels
KAMPALA, Sept 18, 2003 (Xinhua) — Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has warned the Sudan against rearming Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels, saying that Uganda would inform the United Nations Security Council about it, reported government newspaper The New Vision on Thursday.
“The Sudan has to be very careful. We are watching very keenly. Even if the Sudan supplied Joseph Kony (LRA rebel leader) with anti-aircraft and other weapons, we shall continue capturing them, ” Museveni was quoted as saying.
Museveni made the remarks at a news conference Tuesday night at Sate House, saying that after Dec. 31, the government would issue international arrest warrants for the top LRA chiefs Kony, Vincent Otti and Tabuley.
“The amnesty was available to those terrorists for many years. Now they have up to the end of this year. They have three months. Our target is to kill them off. We are getting them one by one,” he said.
On the military situation in northern and eastern Uganda, Museveni said the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) had flushed the LRA out of Teso region, eastern Uganda except for a few remnants.
“We are garrisoning the whole area. More than 200,000 people who had run away are returning home,” he said.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Security Netty Akech Wednesday attacked the Sudan for “renewed support for Kony,” according to The New Vision.
She said Minister of Defense Amama Mbabazi would soon fly to the Sudan to negotiate with the Sudanese government on peace in the region.
