Vice-president urges EU to honour commitments

Aug 30, 2005 (Khartoum) — The first vice-president and president of the southern government, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has urged the international community, especially the EU, to honour the commitments they had made in the Oslo donor conference.

During his meeting today with the EU special representative [to Sudan], Pekka Haavisto, at the Republican Palace, the first vice-president sent a message to European leaders in this regard, affirming his commitment to implement the peace agreement.

Lt-Gen Salva Kiir affirmed the EU’s major role in supporting the implantation of the peace agreement as well as bringing stability to Sudan. He point out his concern regarding the issue of the displaced and providing a [suitable] atmosphere for their voluntary return.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese ambassador to Brussels, Dr Ali Yusuf, told Suna that the meeting reviewed the EU’s mission in fortifying the implantation of the peace agreement as well as help in solving the Darfur issue through the AU’s support.

He added that the EU envoy had affirmed the importance of the Sudanese people in solving the Darfur issue with the help of the AU.
