Six rebels killed in northern Uganda

Sep 1, 2005 (Kampala) — At least six Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels were killed on Wednesday when a Ugandan army helicopter gunship raided their hideout at Nyono hills in northern Uganda.

Two other rebels were captured during the raid, a local press quoted Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) intelligence coordinator in the north Col. Charles Otema Awany as saying on Thursday.

He said the army recovered four guns from the rebels.

LRA rebels, based in southern Sudan, have killed tens of thousands of civilians and displaced over 1.4 million people in their 19-year rebellion in northern Uganda.

The Ugandan army announced that it had defeated the rebel group, saying it had killed 550 rebels and captured more than 300 guns since January this year.

Now he (rebel leader Joseph Kony) is remaining with very few people, maybe 100, and has now fled to north of Juba on Nisitu- Torit road,” Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said this week.
