Sudanese first vice-president to hold talks with opposition leaders in Cairo

High-ranking sources have said a meeting will take place between the first vice-president, Ali Uthman Muhammad Taha, the head of the [opposition] National Democratic Alliance, Muhammad Uthman Al- Mirghani, and the head of the [opposition ] Ummah Party, [UP] Al- Sadiq al-Mahdi, during Taha’s visit to Cairo which will start tomorrow.
During his visit, Taha will also meet the Egyptian president, Husni Mubarak, and other high-ranking officials to shed light on the Naivasha [Kenya] agreement which was signed between the government and the [rebel] SPLM [Sudan People’s Liberation Movement].
The deputy leader of the DUP, Gen Abd Al-Rahman Sa’id, said it was likely that the meeting between the first vice-president with the DUP’s leader would take place during Taha’s visit to Cairo.
“We welcome contacts with the first vice-president due to the DUP’s wish to achieve peace and a democratic change in the country”, Sa’id said.
