Sudanese govt ready for Darfur peace talks

Sept 11, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Chairman of the government delegation to Abuja peace talks on Darfur, Magzoub Al-Khalifa, said in a press conference here Sunday that the government is ready for the coming session and fully authorized in this regard.

The sixth session of talks between the government and the two Darfur rebel groups, Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement, are due to begin next Thursday in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

Khalifa said that the government delegation includes all the political spectrum in Sudan, including Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) toward reaching solution for the pending issues.

He said that breakthrough in the social security, mutual confidence rebuilding, stability and the humanitarian affairs is anticipated to pave the way for success of the coming negotiation.

Khalifa has appreciated the reports of the United Nations and the African Union which affirmed that no violations were committed by the government in Darfur.

He also referred to the appreciation of the international community to the role of Sudan government toward reaching comprehensive peace in Darfur.

He indicated that the recent meeting in Tanzania, organized by the African Union, has witnessed objective discussions and decided that the negotiations shall be resumed in the scheduled time.

He said that Tanzania meeting also decided that the coming session of negotiation shall begin in the form of seminars, which will be given by a number of experts and specialists.

Al-Khalifa said that the government determined that the year 2005 will be one for peace in Sudan, hoping that the coming negotiations will be held in a climate of peace and confidence and be for the nation’s interest.
