British minister starts visit to Sudan
Oct 5, 2005 (LONDON) — British Foreign Office Minister for Africa, Lord Triesman today began afour-day visit of Sudan.
He will meet with the EU Troika on the October 8, to pass on tough messages to the Government of Sudan demandingthat they address the rapidly deteriorating security situation inDarfur.
The EU Troika consists of Lord Triesman, CFSP High Representative Javier Solana, Austrian Secretary of State Hans Winkler, and a Representative from the Commission.
The EU has already made clear that it expects all sides to rein intheir fighters urgently and to reach a full political settlement in theAbuja peace talks.
The Troika will also underline the importance offull implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement; improving Human Rights; and alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
Whilst there, Lord Triesman will also visit Darfur, where he will seethe security and humanitarian situation first hand.
He will visit acamp for Internally Displaced Persons, and meet with NGOs and the African Union to discuss the situation there.
He will then travel to Juba, Southern Sudan, where he will meetrepresentatives of the newly formed devolved Government of Southern Sudan.
The Troika plans to meet the Presidency of the Government of National Unity and the new Foreign Minister in Khartoum.
