African summit in Khartoum important opportunity for Sudan – adviser

Nov29, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — The Presidential Adviser, Mustafa Osman Ismail, has stressed the importance of holding the sixth African Union summit in Khartoum in January.

Mustafa_Osman_Ismail.jpgDuring a workshop organized today by the National Centre for Diplomatic Studies in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the title “Towards an active African Union”, the former Foreign Minister Mustafa Ismail presented a report about the goals expected to be discussed during the summit.

He said that the summit, at the national level, aims to affirm Sudan’s active role in supporting joint African action and strengthening its role in the African arena especially during this sensitive time where African teamwork is witnessing significant transformation in dealing with a number of issues facing this continent.

Ismail said the summit was an opportunity for Sudan to express its views and stances regarding the issues concerning it at local and regional levels, as well as reflect Sudan’s culture and heritage.

He said the AU summit will gain special importance because it will coincide with the Golden Jubilee of Sudan’s independence.

The Presidential Adviser said there were a number of issues that would be suggested during the forthcoming summit in Khartoum represented in discussing Africa’s vision for reforms in the UN as well as discuss suggestions about establishing a United States of Africa and setting up of African government.

It will follow up and evaluate the successes made by African countries in achieving the millennium goals for development as well as discuss the situations in a number of regions in Africa that are having tensions and conflicts.

Ismail said that the summit is aimed at achieving a strategic step towards promoting African-Arab cooperation, pointing out that Sudan was prepared for this initiative.
