Feb 27, 2006 — JEM has recently been informed that the AU has requested the UN to take over security and protection of civilians in Darfur. The AU will continue overseeing the negotiations in Abuja in addition to current work for a political solution of the crisis in the Region. The AU cited shortage of fund and logistical means as a reason behind its request. Commenting on this situation, JEM states the following:

Protection of Darfur civilians, their honour and properties remains a top priority for JEM. This priority overrides all slogans raised by the GoS in its current campaign against the intended UN international troops in Darfur, notwithstanding the sovereignty of Sudan.
The presence of international troops in the Sudan and their alleged breach of Sudan’s sovereignty is nothing new. There are already international forces in the Nuba Mountains, the Blue Nile, the South of Sudan, Eastern Sudan and Darfur. These forces are there by virtue of protection of the CPA and in accordance with UN Resolutions. JEM reminds Khartoum authority that the presence of these troops is necessitated by the need to protect Sudanese civilians against war crimes, genocidal acts and crimes against humanity perpetrated by the government itself.
JEM stands shoulder to shoulder with Regional and International efforts to protect the people of Darfur against the excesses of Khartoum government that continues to this day. We recall here the current mission of death and destruction being carried out by the government army, aided by its janjaweed and supported by air cover and against all signed Security Protocols. The mission which is still in progress, led to complete burning down of Andrab town in the area in the last two days
JEM reminds the Khartoum Government that whoever wants to enjoy state sovereignty must abide by its obligations and responsibilities. Needless to say, that includes protection of citizens, their rights, properties and dignity.
The Movement values and fully supports the efforts and sacrifices made by the African Union in Darfur. We salute all the countries that contributed to the protection of Darfur people against the evils of Khartoum Government. We further stress that we welcome any contribution from the part of the international community that augments the security and protection of Darfur people.
