Ethiopia, Israel bilateral ties are gaining momentum

April 3, 2006 (TEL AVIV) — Political and socio-economic relations between Ethiopia and Israel are gaining momentum from time to time.

Yohannes Fenta told the state-run ENA in Tel Aviv that the existing relations between Ethiopia and Israel have been enhanced since Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin paid a visit to Israel.

As relations continue to scale up in various aspects, the two countries have begun demonstrating solidarity on some international forums, according to the official.

Yohannes said the two countries have also signed agreements on trade, science and technology, investment, avoidance of double tax, among others.

He added that the two countries have already begun jointly working in the areas of science and technology, particularly on HIV/AIDS research, solar energy and biogas technology.

The official said Israel has been providing wide-ranging training opportunities for Ethiopians in agriculture and other sectors.

He added Israeli investors have been engaged in floriculture development at Debre Zeit, Chancho, Sebeta and Zeway areas using the investment friendly atmosphere in Ethiopia.

Israeli investors are eyeing on Ethiopia, Yohannes said, adding, investors have been approaching the Embassy to get relevant information on investment prospects in Ethiopia.

He said Ethiopian Jews have been playing a significant role in promoting the investment opportunities in Ethiopia for Israeli investors.
