North Korea welcomes Darfur peace accord

May 17, 2006 (PYONGYANG) — The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea government and people that have consistently asserted a peaceful settlement of all disputes through dialogues and negotiations free from foreign interference sincerely rejoice at and warmly hail the provision of a political and legal foundation for the settlement of the crisis in Darfur.

Paek Nam-sun, minister of foreign affairs, said this in a message sent to Lam Akol, foreign minister of Sudan, in connection with the recent conclusion of a peace agreement for settling the crisis in Darfur thanks to the sincere efforts of the Sudanese government, Korean News Agency KCNA reported.

The conclusion of the peace agreement marks a great event that demonstrated the firm will of the Sudanese government to peacefully settle all disputes by its own efforts and opened a bright future for the Sudanese people desirous of the country’s stability, unity, progress and prosperity, the message noted.

Expressing the belief that the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries would grow stronger in the future, the message sincerely wished the Sudanese government and people fresh and greater success in their efforts to put a definite end to the internal disturbances and achieve durable peace and national unity.
