SLM’s Minawi arrives in Darfur
May 29, 2006 (AL-FASHER) — The leader of the main faction of the Sudan Liberation Movement which signed peace agreement with the Sudanese government arrived here today from the Libyan capital Tripoli.
Chairman of Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), Minni Minawi, arrived in the capital of North Darfur, Al-Fasher Today. He was received by the governor of North Darfur State, members of the state government, the state-run SUNA reported.
In a press conference he held at the headquarters of the African Union mission upon his arrival, Minawi said that the peace agreement, which was recently signed in Abuja, will be implemented due to seriousness of the signatory parties.
He said that the differences appeared between the movement’s field commanders were something normal, and usually occur at most political organizations in the world.
In this regard, the SPM indicated in a press release issued today that the movement has to hold a general conference to discuss the signed agreement with the Sudanese government on 5 May in Abuja.
The SLM spokesperson Esam Eddine al-Haj, stated that the SLM parliament has to adopt first the agreement before festivities.
Arkoy indicated that his final return to the homeland will be next week.
He said that the refuse of some tribes to sign the peace agreement will affect the security, calling in this regard upon Justice and Equality Movement and the faction of Abdul-Wahid Mohamed Nur at Sudan Liberation Movement to join the peace march.
The Agreement has realized gains for the people of Darfur, as the attained peace is for the entire nation, he said. He stressed that Sudan Liberation Movement is one for all people while the peace agreement is for all the Sudanese people and the citizens of Darfur.
He disclosed that his meeting with the Libyan leader, Muammar Gadhafi, reviewed his important role to back up the peace agreement, adding that the Libyan leader expressed his support to the people of Darfur and affirmed the necessity of the signing of the agreement by other parties.
He disclosed that the Libyan leader is exerting serious efforts and contacts to convince the other parties to sign the peace agreement for the sake of durable peace and stability in Darfur.
Minawi came to AL-Fasher from Tripoli where he met the presidential advisor Majzoub al-Khalifa.
