Security Council visit is a positive step – Sudan

June 1, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese Foreign Ministry said that the visit of the Security Council Mission to the country, due on current June 5, is a positive step to cast light on Sudan and progress of the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA).

The UN Security Council with all its members, headed by the envoy of Britain, Emyr Jones Parry, is due to begin a five-day visit to Sudan on June 5th to get acquainted with the situation in the country. The visit aims for consultations with the officials at the federal and Darfur region’s levels on issues pending at the Security Council.

Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mahjoub al-Basha, in a meeting with the representative of local media and pressmen at the premises of the Foreign Ministry Thursday, said that the visit is a good opportunity to know the issues of Sudan as well as the real situations on ground in the south and Darfur.

He called on the media to reflect the positive aspects of the visit and utilize it in the way that achieves the interests of the country.

Deputy Chairman of Sudan’s Mission to the United Nations in New York Ambassador Omer Beshir, speaking at the meeting, explained that the visit of the Security Council’s mission to Sudan is a routine visit, saying that the council used to make such visits to the countries with issues on its table.

He said the council is to meet with the government officials and visit a number of areas. He, as well, denied convocation of an official session for the Security Council in Sudan.

The ambassador, further, said that the timing of the visit is good, particularly with regard to finding means for implementing Abuja agreement and supporting the repatriation programmes of the internally displaced persons and refugees.

In this regard, he urged the donors to provide the necessary resources to implement these programmes. Director of the Crisis management Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and member of the Government Delegation for Abuja talks Ambassador Osman Dirar, on his part, said the DPA is a comprehensive agreement as it provides a proper ground for putting an end to the war through the item of security arrangements.

He said the agreement also constituted for political participation and wealth sharing. He further affirmed the important role of media in informing with the agreement and shedding light on its content.
