Sudan issues general amnesty for Darfur peace signatories

June 12, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — President Omer Al-Bashir, issued Sunday 11 June a Republican Decree, declaring general amnesty for rebel groups who signed Abuja Peace Agreement on Darfur.

Omar_el-Bashi.jpgThe amnesty also includes those who joined the peace agreement afterward as well as parties of the tribal reconciliations which took place in Darfur States and endorsed by the concerned authorities

The governor of North Darfur State, Mohamed Yousif Kibir, appreciated the Republican Decree on general amnesty for rebel groups who signed Abuja peace Agreement on Darfur.

Kibir in a press statement said that the decree came as a boost to the peace agreement, adding that it contributes to the re-building of confidence and it provides a conducive atmosphere among the gun holders.

The governor said that there are 17 field commanders who had returned to Al-Fasher and received pardon according to the implementation of the peace agreement for removing doubts.

He said that Darfur peace agreement was supported by the international community and the Sudanese people.
