Sudan SPLM to met Darfur’s SLM rebels

June 24, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The spokesman of the Darfur rebel Sudan Liberation Movement advance delegation currently visiting Khartoum, Mahjoub Hussein, told Khartoum Monitor that their group is holding a meeting today afternoon at the Green Village Hotel with senior personalities of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) under chairmanship of Yasir Arman.

Meeting for the first time in Khartoum, leaders in the two movements are expected to discuss several issues including the difficulties facing the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and the Darfur peace agreement Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA).

The issue of intervention by a UN led peacekeeping force in Darfur would also be discussed.

The advance delegation represents Minni Minawi wing of the SLM that signed the AU-brokered agreement in early May, but the two rebel factions, one led by Abdelwahid al-Nur, leader of one faction of SLM and the other by Khalil Ibrahim leader of the Justice and Equality Movement refused to sign the 5 May Darfur Peace Agreement, claiming it did not address their key political and security demands.
