Closure of Wau University after riots

Sept 20, 2006 (WAU) — The main campus of the University of Bahr-al-Ghazal State in the capital of the state, Wau, has been closed temporarily following a student’s riot yesterday.

Students rioted after University Administration rejected their demand for the formation of their union, arguing that the students should first meet basic requirements for the formation of the student’s union.

The Wau County Commissioner, Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Charles Mgberende, told Sudan Radio Service that the university students went on a rampage on Sunday, after the University Administration and the students failed to agree on the formation of the students’ union.

“Also they have some other requests, like they need a generator, generator was brought to them, they need lecturers, 20 new lecturers were brought to them, but they are still demanding that the university must form the union” said Mgberende.

The commissioner said students destroyed a vehicle belonging to the faculty of health and caused damages to other university property. He added that one of the lecturers from the faculty of health was seriously injured.
