China calls for full implementation of Darfur peace deal

Dec 12, 2006 (GENEVA) — Comprehensive political solution is the fundamental way to improve the situation of Sudan’s Darfur region, and all parties concerned should truly fulfil the already-reached peace agreement, Sha Zukang, representative of the Chinese Permanent Mission to UN Office at Geneva, said on 12 December.

The official agency Xinhua reported in Chinese that Chinese envoy Sha Zukang urged at the Fourth Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva all the concerned parties to implement Darfur peace deal.

“China feels concerned about the security situation and humanitarian condition in the Darfur region. It believes that the reasons for the conflicts are complicated and multi-fold, and the urgent task at present is to require all parties to truly fulfil the Darfur Peace Agreement” Zukang said.

Meanwhile, Sha Zukang called on all parties concerned to abide by their commitments, take effective measures to protect Darfur people, especially such weak groups as women and children, ensure that all refugees and homeless people receive necessary humanitarian assistance on time, and punish according to law the disturbance creators who have severely infringed on human rights and violated international humanitarian law.

Sha Zukang said that China appreciates the efforts made by the African Union towards the political solution of the Darfur issue. It calls on the international community to encourage the Sudanese government in a constructive way to work in coordination with the African Union in comprehensively solving the Darfur issue as soon as possible so as to eliminate the source of humanitarian crises and achieve the goal of promoting and protecting human rights.

The UN Human Rights Council opened its Fourth Special Session on 12 December to discuss the security situation and humanitarian condition in the Darfur region. In a video address, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan expressed the hope that, through the current session, the UN Human Rights Council would send an unequivocal message to the international community, that is, act of violence and infringement upon human rights in Darfur must stop.
