Sudanese opposition female leader back to Sudan after 13 years in exile?
KHARTOUM, Dec 17, 2003 (KUNA) — Sudanese opposition leader Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim who spent 13 years abroad in voluntary exile returned home on Wednesday.
On her arrival, Fatima announced her support for all efforts aimed to stop war in the south and confirmed that she would do her best to “fight cultural and sectarian discrimination.”
She denied reports that she was dismissed from the Sudanese Communist Party while being away, and expressed hope to unify women activities under the Sudanese Woman Union, which she used to preside.
Fatima had left Sudan, together with some party leaders, when President Omar Al-Bashir became president in 1989. She is one of the first Sudanese women who worked in politics and had disputes with Sudanese governments, mainly that of former President Jaafar Numairi.
