South Sudan delegation visits agricultural projects in Eritrea
March 28, 2007 (MASSAWA) — Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki today held talks in Massawa with a delegation of the South Sudan government headed by the Minister of Agriculture, Martin Aliya Lomuro, the official Shabait website reported. The delegation visited agricultural development in the country.
In the meeting which the Eritrean Minister of Agriculture, Arefaine Berhe attended, the President pointed out that it is gratifying to note the stage that South Sudan has reached after a long struggle. He further underlined that development includes facilitating economic progress, social services, infrastructure, thereby fulfilling the aspirations and needs of the people.
Stating, that Eritrea is ready to cooperate with the South Sudan government, President Isaias expressed conviction that the visit of the Eritrean government delegation in South Sudan and that of the South Sudan government delegation in Eritrea would be elevated o the next level for implementation.
The South Sudan government delegation explained that it had observed several successful projects carried out through internal resources. The delegation further pointed out that this experience would be useful in the reconstruction of South Sudan.
Meanwhile, the 8-member South Sudan government delegation conducted a visit in the regions of Anseba and Gash-Barka on March 27 and 2 respectively.
The delegation accompanied by Minister Arefaine Berhe and the Administrator of Anseba region, Ms. Selma Hassan, visited the Elabered Estate, Keren Drugs Factory and Hagaz Technical School. They were given detailed briefings by experts and mangers of the institutions as regards their establishment and production, as well as the contribution they are making in the nation-building process.
In the course of the delegation’s visit to Gash-Barka region, the Minister of Agriculture, Arefaine Berhe and the regional Administrator, Kahsai Gebrehiwet, accompanied it. The delegation visited Tessenei sub-zone, particularly the vegetable farms and agricultural projects along the Gash river.
During its visit in Golij sub-zone, Gereset and Aligidir areas, the delegation observed the on-going and already finalized agricultural infrastructure project. It also received briefings by experts.
Indicating that they witnessed the major role modern agriculture plays in national development process, members of the delegation stated that Eritrea’s relentless efforts to ensure food security provides exemplary experience.
Moreover, they expressed their admiration during a visit to the long-time agricultural infrastructure in Elabered and the underground dam under construction around Hagaz Technical School.
The South Sudan government’s Ministry of Agriculture delegation arrived in Eritrea on March 26 to observe the outcomes registered in the nation-building process, specifically infrastructure and agricultural activities, besides exchanging experiences with Eritrean counterparts.
