Ethiopia to work for the resolution of Darfur crisis – Girma

March 29, 2007 (ADDIS ABABA) — President Girma Woldegiorgis has said that Ethiopia would enhance its efforts to resolve the Darfur crisis. The president held talks with Sudanese parliamentarian delegation.

President Girma Thursday held talks with the Sudanese parliamentarians. He briefed the delegation on the longstanding relations between the two countries. The president said the relations between the two countries have developed in to people to people relations.

He said Ethiopia would do its utmost at the AU and other forums in resolving the Darfur crisis.

Ahmed Ibrahim Tahir, Speaker and head of the Sudanese delegation, on his part appreciated Ethiopia’s contribution in resolving the southern Sudan issue and urged the Ethiopian government to exert similar efforts to resolve the Darfur issue.

While briefing journalists after their meeting with the president, Tahir said that they briefed the president on the current situation in Sudan. He said that they also discussed on ways of practically implementing the Sudan peace accord. He said that they also discussed on ways of strengthening the Ethiopia-Sudan relations.

The Sudanese lawmakers met also with the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi.

The Sudanese delegation led by the Speaker, Ahmed Ibrahim Tahir, during its meeting with Zenawi it was stated that the parliaments of the two countries are jointly working for peace to prevail in the region.

Tahir briefed the premier on the positive results so far achieved on the previous development agreements reached between the two countries.
