Civil society requested to help fight corruption in South Sudan

April 3, 2007 (MALUALKON) – The Southern Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission secretary in Malualkon has called on civil society organizations to play a “watchdog” role in the fight against corruption in southern Sudan.

Speaking during a meeting of civil society groups organized by the international NGO Mercy Corps in Malualkon, Lucy Malong said the Government of Southern Sudan has stepped up its fight against corruption but added that civil society can help ensure good governance and the rule of law.

She said the Government of Southern Sudan would like to work with civil society organizations to build capacity within government institutions, the Sudan Radio Service reported.

on the other hand, about 1500 internally displaced persons who have returned to Malualkont face a shortage of clean drinking water. The SRRC Secretary says authorities in the area are working hard to provide the returnees with food, water and non-food items.
