1070 Meningitis Cases reported in Sudan

April 29, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — The federal health minister, Dr. Tabitha Butrus, yesterday stated that meningitis cases at the national level had reached 1,070 casualties.
In the report she present yesterday before the Cabinet, Dr. Tabitha indicated that out of the overall meningitis cases, there were 53 fatalities.
The Cabinet official spokesman. Omer Mohammed Salih, later quoted the health Minister as elucidating that the figures cited for the casualties on epidemic.
He stressed that the health ministry has affected all the prerequisite precautions and measures for controlling and containing the disease by availing vaccines at the state and national levels, and training cadres, keeping in mind that most of the cases took place in the states of Gezira, Sinnar, Darfur, and north Bahr-al-Ghazal.
Salih reiterated that the cabinet at its periodic session held yesterday was reassured on the health situation in the country by the health ministry’s report which affirmed that the meningitis wave is controllable.
