France welcomes Sudan accord, urges conclusion of outstanding points?

PARIS, Jan 8, 2004 (KUNA) — France on Thursday said it welcomed the agreement ‏‏reached by the warring factions in Sudan and urged negotiators to conclude the ‏‏territorial and political talks on outstanding questions.‏

Noting that there was now an agreement on the sharing of natural ‏‏resources notably oil wealth, the French government said the parties must ‏‏strive for a broad and final agreement that will end the decades-old conflict.‏

“France calls on the two parties to pursue negotiations on the remaining ‏‏points with the same constructive spirit in order to conclude, as quickly as ‏‏possible, a general peace accord,” a Foreign Ministry statement said.‏

France also praised the role of Kenya in helping broker the agreement ‏‏between the Muslim government in Khartoum and Christian and Animist forces ‏‏under the umbrella of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Sudan, which ‏‏is based mainly in the south.
