Sudanese professionals call on African Union to suspend Sudan’s membership

October 26, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese Professional Association (SPA), the spearhead of the December 2019 revolution has called on the African Union to suspend Sudan’s membership in response to last Monday’s military coup.

In a letter to Bankole Adeoye Commissioner For Political Affairs, Peace And Security, African Union Commission on Tuesday seen by the Sudan Tribune, the SPA urged the support of the regional body to press for the return of the transitional government.

“We further urge the African Union to suspend Sudan membership at the AU, until Prime Minster Hamdok and his detained cabinet members are released and re-instated safely to resume their mission as agreed upon in the constitutional document and the Juba Peace agreement,” reads the letter.

Hamdok and his wife were moved from a facility in the army command in Khartoum to his residence where he is under house arrest.

The head of the military council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan vowed on Tuesday to release the detained officials and political leaders but he added that some of them may face justice.

on Monday 25, the African Union Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat called for the release of Sudanese political leaders.

“The Chairperson calls for the immediate resumption of consultations between civilians and military within the framework of the Political Declaration and the Constitutional Decree,” added the statement.

Faki further stressed that dialogue and consensus is “the only relevant path” to save the country and its democratic transition.
