U.S. Feltman to join efforts to end Sudan’s crisis
November 1, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa will arrive in Khartoum Tuesday to join the ongoing efforts to settle the Sudanese crisis, said the Information Ministry loyal to Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok.
Hamdok who is under house arrest met Monday with Troika ambassador and chargé d’affairs in Khartoum.
“The (Troika) ambassadors informed the Prime Minister of the arrival of the U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Jeffrey Feltman, to Khartoum on Tuesday, 2 November Morning, to continue efforts to defuse the crisis,” reads a statement released by the Government’s Spokesman Office.
U.S. Charge d’affaires Brian Shukan posted a tweet confirming that he, Norway and the UK ambassadors had met with Hamdok on Monday.
“Pleased to see him in good health. Reiterate calls for his full release, and that of other detainees, as an essential step towards further dialogue,” said Shukan.
In a statement issued on 26 October, the EU and Troika countries said they continue to recognize Hamdok as the legitimate Sudanese Prime Minister and called to meet him. Monday meeting was the second after his detention.
The Ministry of Information said Hamdok told the three envoys that “he will not be a party to any arrangements in accordance with the coup decisions issued on October 25”.
He further called to release the detained government members and political leaders and to restore the transitional government, underscored the statement.
On Monday, Reuters said Hamdok accepted a proposal made by mediators calling to form a new cabinet of technocrats as requested by the head of the military council Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors on Monday said the security forces and the Rapid Support Forces used live ammunition to disperse peaceful protesters in the Al-Abbasiya neighbourhood of Omdurman.
“One protester was shot with a gun bullet in the shoulder, and three other protesters are wounded,” added the independent prodemocracy medical group.
