Saudi Arabia, UEA join calls for restoration of democratic transition in Sudan
November 3, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the USA, and the UK called for the immediate restoration of the civilian-led transitional government in Sudan.
The quadrilateral statement intended to show a clear stance of the Gulf countries particularly the UAE which is perceived as supporters of the military junta. Riyadh had already condemned the takeover.
“We call for the full and immediate restoration of its civilian-led transitional government and institutions” reads the joint statement which calls on the civilians and military to work together to achieve the goals of the transition.
The four countries also called for the release of political detainees and the lift of the state of emergency.
The statement stressed “the importance of the commitment to the Constitutional Document and the Juba Peace Agreement as the foundation for further dialogue about how to restore and uphold a genuine civil-military partnership”.
The statement intends to further isolate the military leaders at the regional level.
The Sudanese generals call to expand the transition and associate political groups that would allow them to neutralize the FFC coalition which insists on the need to implement the security reforms that the military are recalcitrant to implement.
Al-Burhan intends to keep the economic activities of the army while his accomplice and leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rejects to merge his militia in the Sudanese army.
Observers in Khartoum say concerned by the quick reappointment of Islamist elements who had been purged by the Hamdok government from the security apparatus and the administration.
Mariam al-Mahdi Minister of Foreign Affairs loyal to Prime Minister Hamdok, welcomed the Quad statement on Sudan.
In a short statement issued on Wednesday, al-Mahdi said she sent a message of appreciation and gratitude to the foreign ministers for the Quad for Sudan to thank them for their support of the Sudanese people and their legitimate government.
