Sovereign Council appoints new Sudan’s chief justice
November 25, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The Transitional Sovereign Council on Thursday appointed Abdel-Aziz Fathal-Rahman Abdeen Mohamed as the new Chief Justice of Sudan.
The chief justice is to be appointed by the Sovereign Council after consultations with the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) but after the October 25 coup, al Burhan has appointed a new council without the coalition.
Councilmember and Spokeswoman Salma Abdel-Jabbar told reporters that the Council appointed Abdel-Aziz Fath al-Rahman as head of the judiciary, within the framework of complementing the state’s judicial and legal structures.
She added that the chief justice would appoint his deputies and aides.
Fath-Al-Rahman served as the acting chief justice before his formal appointment.
The newly-appointed spokeswoman said that “The Council will continue its deliberations to appoint the attorney general to complete legal and justice institutions and to consolidate the rule of law.”
During the past period, the FFC had proposed several judges for the position of chief justice and general attorney, but the military component didn’t follow suit.
Also, she announced the formation of a committee headed by the Sovereign Council Deputy Chairman Mohamed Hamdan Daglo to deal with the situation in eastern Sudan.
The committee will include three other council members: Tahir Hajar, Abul Gassim Burtom and Abdel-Bagi Abdel-Gadir.
