Egypt appoints a special envoy for Darfur

July 27, 2007 (CAIRO) — Egypt announced the appointment of a special envoy for Darfur.

The presidential spokesman Ambassador Sulayman Awwad. said that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has chosen ambassador Ahmad Haggag for the newly created post.

The announcement was made following a meeting between Mubarak and Sudanese presidential adviser Ghazi Salahuddin in which the latter delievered a message from Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir

“The message tackled the current situation in Darfur and the Khartoum government’s efforts to include all Darfuri factions into the Abuja peace agreement to help achieve peace in the troubled region” Awwad said.

Awwad said that the Sudanese president briefed President Mubarak on a currently circulated UN draft resolution to deploy an international force in Darfur.

President Mubarak stressed support to all efforts aiming at establishing peace in Sudan, he added.

Mubarak said that a recent visit to Darfur by the Sudanese president showed that the situation was improving in the region, said the spokesman.
