SLM condemns the arrest of rebel representatives at Darfur ceasefire body
Sudan Liberation Movement/Army
The SLM/A condemns the arbitrary arrests of Darfur Movements’ representatives with the CFC by the NCP security forces
The government of the National Congress Party (NCP) is continuing on with its policy of genocide, gross human rights violations, and flagrant violations to all UNSC resolutions. The fact that the international community has been sitting idle for far too long has made the NCP to adopt and carryout its destructive policy. Ironically, the international community condemned the latest attack on the AU-UN Hybrid Forces in Tine, North Darfur which left one person dead and few others seriously injured.
Another violation (by the NCP) to previously signed ceasefire agreements and protocols took place in Elfashir, North Darfur two weeks ago. On December 29, 2007, the NCP security forces raided a Justice and Equality Movement’s (JEM) compound in Elfashir and arrested six JEM’s representatives with the Ceasefire Commission (CFC). None of the six representatives has been released yet. Two days ago, another JEM representative, called Adam Suliaman Digaise, has been arrested by the NCP security forces in Elfashir. Below are the names of the other six JEM’s representatives who are currently under detention by the NCP security forces: Abdelrahim Fadul, Suliaman Hasaballah, Hamid Idriss Jazim, Mohamed Abaker, Hamid Idriss Abu, Mohamed Bashar Ahmed.
In light of what took place in Elfashir the past two weeks, the SLM/A condemns the arrests of Darfur Movements’ representatives with the CFC. The SLM/A asks for the expedite release of those who have been detained by the NCP security forces.
The SLM/A is also concerned about the safety of its representatives with the CFC in Elfashir. The UN and the AU have an obligation to protect our representatives with the CFC at all time, and put an end to such arbitrary arrests by the NCP security forces. Should the UN and the AU are not able to provide protection to the Movements’ representatives with the CFC, the SLM/A would pull its representatives from the CFC. Such decision will have a profound negative impact on the operation of the hybrid forces in providing protection to innocent civilians and in implementing all previously adopted UNSC resolutions.
The SLM/A also calls on the international community to take punitive measures against the government of the NCP in putting obstacles on the face of implementing UNSC Resolution No. 1769 as well as its (NCP) desperate attempt to block the deployment of the AU-UN Hybrid Forces to Darfur.
