Former Sudanese soldiers protest over salary payment delay

January 20, 2008 (KHARTOUM) – Former soldiers of the Sudanese army on Saturday blocked main boulevards in the capital leading to HQ of the army in protest against no-payment of salary and other dues.

Hundreds of former Sudan Armed Forces soldiers went on a rampage in Khartoum last Saturday in protest at the government’s failure to pay them. The demonstration caused a traffic jam in downtown Khartoum after the soldiers blocked bridges and main streets in the capital for over four hours.

The police cordoned off the site but did not intervene, and the demonstrators closed the roads leading to the leadership and blocked traffic for long hours during work hours on Sunday.

The soldiers demanded payment pf their holiday pay, cash advances from their pension and post service benefits.

The spokesperson of Sudan’s army said that they are demanding cash advances which are approved on a case by case basis. He said the others are demanding holiday pay and work is underway to disburse these payments.
