August 9, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The SPLM-N led by Abdel Aziz al-Hilu said they are ready to endorse a new transitional constitutional declaration if it matches its vision for a secular state in Sudan.

The Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) coalition intends to present a new constitutional declaration to the forces of the revolution in the coming days. The text focus on the full civilian government to implement needed reforms before elections.

“If the constitutional declaration is in agreement with the SPLM-N’s vision and project to preserve the rights of marginalised people, then there is no reason for us to oppose it,” Mohamed Youssif Al-Mustafa, a member of the SPLM-N leadership told the Sudan tribune on Tuesday.

Al-Mustafa, however, ruled out this probability adding that the aspirations and interests of the coalition are hostile to the vision of the Movement, which controls large areas of South Kordofan state.

Nonetheless, he called to include in the expected declaration the repeal of the laws enacted by the former regime, the dissolution of the Rapid Support Forces, and the General Intelligence Service, as well as achieving a just peace.

The FFC says that the under-preparation constitutional declaration establishes a new constitutional system in the country, in which the role of the army is limited to maintaining security, protecting the constitutional order and the country’s integrity.

South Sudan hosted peace talks between the government and the SPLM-N al-Hilu are stalled over the definition of the separation of state and religion and the demand for self-determination for the regions South of Kordofan and the Blue Nile.

SPA insists on justice

On his part, a spokesperson for the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), Alwaleed Ali, stated that the association would not consider any constitutional declaration that does not include accountability for the coup leaders and their supporters but also for those involved in the bloody raid on the pro-democracy sit-in in 2019.

Ali further said they call for the cancellation of the Juba Peace Agreement signed in October 2020 and the dissolution of the FFC’s leadership council.
