Ambassador Godfrey (L) met on Monday Ambassador Dafallah Al-Haj Ali, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 5, 2022.

September 5, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – U.S. Ambassador told the Sudanese government that he would work to bridge the gaps between the Sudanese parties to reach an agreement over democratic transition under civilian leadership.

John Godfrey met on Monday with Ambassador Dafallah al-Haj Ali, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The two diplomats discussed ways to develop bilateral relations and help Sudan achieve the democratic transition.

“Ambassador Godfrey vowed to narrow the gaps between the Sudanese stakeholders involved in the political process with the view to forming a civilian Government,” reported the official news agency after the meeting.

On September 3, the Quad diplomats in Khartoum sought to bring together the military component, the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) and the armed groups, signatories of the Juba Peace Agreement.

However, SLM leader Minni Minnawi and JEM leader came with their allied member of the National Consensus Forces (NCF), causing the withdrawal of the FFC delegation.

The FFC believe that ending the coup d’état requires, as a first step, direct dialogue between them and the coup plotters including the military and their accomplices from the armed groups.

The Quad countries, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States of America seek to support the efforts of the Tripartite Mechanism to end the Sudanese crisis.

The FFC Spokesman Jaafer Hassan dismissed reports about a second meeting organized by the Quad envoys on September 10, at the Saudi Embassy in Khartoum.

“We have not received a new invitation from the Quad for a new meeting in the coming days,” Hassan told Sudan Tribune on Monday.

On October 25, 2021, the military component in the transitional government toppled the civilian government saying there is a need for an inclusive cabinet including more political groups and not only the FFC forces.

The coup intervened after an open conflict between the FFC and the military leaders over the term of the Sovereign Council chairmanship and economic activities of the Sudanese army and its TSF militia.
