November 28, 2022 (KHARTOUM) -The head of the Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, decided to suspend the activities of the unions that courts restored its Islamist leadership.

“The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, issued today a decision to suspend the activities of trade unions, professional unions and the General Federation of Employers,” read a statement released by the official news agency SUNA.

Courts and an appeal committee formed by the Sovereign Council after the coup in October 2021 have reinstated the Islamist-controlled unions dissolved by a committee the civilian government tasked with the dismantlement of the al-Bashir regime.

In another separate decree, al Burhan decided to form a committee headed by the Registrar General of Labour Organizations at the Ministry of Justice.

The committee has to form steering committees for trade unions, professional unions and the General Federation of Employers tasked with the preparations for elections.

Also, the committee of the registrar general has to make an inventory of the balances and accounts of these unions inside and outside Sudan and put them under control.

The membership of the committee should include representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Attorney General, the National Audit Bureau and any person the committee deems appropriate.

Several Islamists posted comments on social media condemning al-Burhan’s decisions saying it violated the impendence of the judiciary.

Last month al-Burhan warned the Sudanese Islamists against attempting to carry out a coup d’etat.

After his October 25 coup, al-Burhan had been slammed for reinstating Islamists in the civil service and restoring their caritative groups.
