South Sudan’s Kiir, Darfur governor discuss security, trade

December 14, 2022 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir on Wednesday met the governor of Darfur region in Sudan, Mini Arko Minawi to discuss security, promotion of trade as well as investment along the borders of the two countries.

The meeting, held in the South Sudanese capital, Juba also discussed the status of the implementation of Juba Peace Agreement signed between the Sudanese government and the armed groups in October 2020.

Kiir’s security advisor, Tut Gatluak Manime said Minawi briefed the South Sudanese leader on the general political situation in the Sudan and on the status of implementation of the Juba Peace accord.

For his part, Minawi said the meeting deliberated on issues of security along border corridors between the two nations as well as promotion of trade between Darfur business community and South Sudanese bordering Darfur region.

He said Kiir called on the parties to Juba peace agreement to review the timeline of the agreement to speed up the implementation of the peace deal in Sudan.

The Juba Peace Agreement was signed by Sudan’s transitional government and many of the country’s main warring factions on October 3, 2020. The agreement covers a range of areas, including governance, security and transitional justice and is intended to inform the future constitutional negotiation process.
