December 17, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Radhouane Nouicer, a former Tunisian diplomat known for his commitment to democratic values, has been appointed as a new independent expert on human rights in Sudan.

On December 16, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk appointed Nouicer as an expert on the situation of human rights in Sudan, replacing Adama Dieng who stepped down from this position in October.

“Radhouane Nouicer, who will assume his duties immediately, has held senior positions at the UN for over 30 years, including at the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA),” read a statement issued in Geneva.

Also, he served as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for the Tunisian Transitional Government in 2011,” after the ouster of the former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

The independent expert has to monitor the human rights situation in Sudan. According to his mandate, he is requested to pay special attention to victims and ensure a gender perspective.

The former expert Dieng had been slammed by Sudanese activists on social media for his timid statements and silence on killing, rape and violent repression of protesters in Sudan after the October 25, 2022 coup.

The UN human rights body reinstated the position of the independent expert on human rights in Sudan after a military coup by Gen al-Burhan against the civilian-led transitional government.
