Army warns to Destroy vehicles circulating on the Khartoum-Bara Road

July 24, 2023, KHARTOUM The Sudanese army issued a warning on Monday, stating that it will consider vehicles traveling on the Khartoum-Bara highway as military targets, mere hours after the decision was made to close it.

The army has been struggling to halt the flow of supplies from Darfur and Kordofan to the capital, Khartoum, for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Despite their efforts, the rebellious group has managed to move its fighters into Khartoum.

According to a statement extended to Sudan Tribune by the military spokesman’s office, the army “will deal with all types of vehicles on the Khartoum-Bara road as military targets.”

The decision to close the Khartoum-Bara road for vehicle traffic was a direct response to the use of RSF elements of the route to transport stolen goods and reinforcements.

Responding to the recent incidents of robbery and burglary perpetrated by its elements in Khartoum, the RSF leadership condemned the acts and established a committee to prosecute the offenders.

Acting Prime Minister, Osman Hussein, made the decision on Monday to close the Khartoum-Bara road, redirecting traffic to the El-Obeid-Kosti-Khartoum road instead.

A war broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, resulting in 3.3 million people fleeing their homes. This conflict has also led to increased insecurity, rising food commodity prices, and a healthcare system on the brink of collapse.
